The Städel Museum is not only one of the oldest art museums in Germany, but is also one of the most important internationally. Its holdings encompass outstanding masterpieces ranging from the early 14th century to contemporary art. In total the collection includes some 3,000 paintings, 600 sculptures, 4,000 photographs and well over 100,000 drawings and prints. The museum enjoys a worldwide reputation for its high quality and outstanding academic research. The foundation was laid in 1815 by the Frankfurt businessman and banker Johann Friedrich Städel when he bequeathed his collection and his fortune to form the basis of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut.
The present selection of 250 masterpieces offers an in-depth insight into the museum’s treasures and provides at the same time an overview of the development of European art over the past 700 years.
